Italian Night - Tuesday 6th November The Italian evening hosted by Giovanni Puiatti was a great success. Giovanni is a master wine maker from the Friuli region of Italy and his wines have always been a favourite of ours. In between courses he gave us a very interesting description of each wine and the ethos behind his winemaking. His father planted the vines forty years ago and laid down certain principles in which Giovanni fervently believes. There should be no grape skin contact with the fermenting wine (other than for a few hours where colour is required), thus very low tannins. Very light crushing of the grapes to extract the juice. No oak barrel aging. Maximum alcohol content 12%. This means that the grapes are not allowed to over-ripen but retain their purity of taste and perfume which is carried through to the finished wine. The wines perfectly complemented the food although Giovanni raised his eyebrows initially at the pairing of Sauvignon Blanc with the soup. After tasting the soup though he agreed that the match was made in heaven! The dessert wine was unusually a red and not one of Giovanni's. It was actually a Recioto della Valpolicella which was not too sweet and very flavoursome. Mike described each course and it's ingredients as it was served and introduced the boys in the kitchen who had worked so hard to produce a truly excellent meal.
